Why are falls such a problem in the workplace?

On Behalf of | Jun 26, 2019 | Workplace injuries

One of the leading causes of severe injuries and workplace deaths in New York is falls. This type of accident is also one that OSHA spends plenty of time working to educate employers about. Some falls are rather minor, but many of them are serious and lead to major injuries, such as those to the head and spine.

According to EHS Today, there is a lot of information about fall prevention and safety. As mentioned, OSHA works hard to ensure employers understand fall risks and prevention. So much is known about keeping workers safe from falls, yet they continue to happen.

There are also many different types of safety equipment and gear that you can use on the job to help prevent falls or to minimize the danger of a fall. You probably have used them if you work at heights. Even with all of this, falls still are the leading cause of workplace deaths.

So, what is the problem? Experts all seem to agree that the issue is not that there is not a way to keep you safe from falls on the job, it is that you likely do not have the proper training to keep yourself safe. You need training in how to use equipment and gear correctly. You need training to understand the fall risks in your job and what you can do to lower them.

The key to preventing falls and making them a lower risk is all about making sure workers have the training to stay safe. So, when you have a safety training meeting, make sure to pay attention and take it seriously. It may save your life. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
