How to prevent back pain at work

On Behalf of | Oct 29, 2019 | Workplace injuries

Back pain can affect almost anyone at work in New York. Sometimes this pain stems from back injuries, whereas other times, it may result from employers asking workers to use tools, equipment and furniture that are not ergonomic. This may put a strain on the back over time, which may lead to pain at home and on the job.

According to Mayo Clinic, repetitive movements and heavy lifting may cause back pain and so can sitting at a desk for long hours or all day. Nurses, factory workers and construction workers tend to have a higher risk of back pain due to spending a lot of time on their feet. Whether the pain is sharp or dull, it may affect a person’s ability to concentrate or carry out their job functions.

There are several ways workers may prevent back pain at work:

  • Office workers may reconsider the position of items on their desk for comfort.
  • Workers should listen to cues from their bodies at work.
  • Use machines when available for lifting and carrying.
  • Consider posture when sitting and standing.
  • Lift with the legs instead of with the back.

Some workers cannot avoid manual heavy lifting in their job. WebMD recommends that they speak with a personal trainer or their doctor about exercises that may strengthen their backs. Some forms of tai chi and yoga have been known to strengthen the back and core muscles. These may also assist with balance and flexibility.
